Gated Community stars in Part 2 of a 5-part series from Hoan Kiem on March 28, 2023, featuring bassist and guitar shredder, @hanuri.kim, who produced the evening’s affair.
Though some of these artists have recently been featured here on @pdxpresents, it’s worth noting that these events offer more than a simple chance to see a band on the rise. They represent a true community gathering of a generation of people that spent nearly half of their high school years under Covid lockdown, and who still have limited opportunities to see music live, thanks to Portland’s strict OLCC policies (more on this in future posts.) As a result, the all-ages events that are held tend to be wild, and extremely well-attended. It’s not uncommon to see 300 or more fans show up in full festival regalia. The energy they put out should be the envy of the entire 21+ crowd, who often attract a smaller, more restrained audience. While not every genre can or should lend itself to crowd surfing and mosh pits, for those of us that witnessed the renaissance of rock music in the 90’s, it’s inspiring to see a new generation of musicians and their fans take the reigns, and they might just be remembered for having self-produced one of the most vibrant music scenes in modern American history.
Give @ggatedcommunity a follow, and keep an eye out for a summer of killer shows.
